Buyeo

Buyeo County (Buyeo-gun) is a county in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea. Buyeo-eup, the county's
capital, was the site of the capital of the Baekje kingdom from AD 538 to 660, when it was called Sabi.
The Baekje Kingdom occupied the southern corner of the peninsula of Korea. The people were northern tribes who kept moving south to avoid Goguryeo and Chinese domination. Baekje established its first capital south of the Hangang River near present day Seoul, but later moved to Gongju(475) and finally to Buyeo located along the Geumgang River in 538. Baekje culture represents a period of almost 700 years, from the founding until its conquest by the allied forces of Silla and Tang China in 660 and was distinctly different from that of Goguryeo or Silla. However, the 123 years in which Buyeo was its capital was the most splendid and prosperous period of the 700 years of Baekje, and this period still comes vividly alive in every corner of present-day Buyeo.

Gongju

Gongju was formerly named Ungjin and was the capital of Baekje from AD 475 to 538. In this period, Baekje was under threat from Goguryeo. Goguryeo had overrun the previous capital of Hanseong (modern-day Seoul), which forced Baekje to find a new center of strength.
In 538, King Seong moved the capital to Sabi (in modern-day Buyeo County). However, Gongju remained an important center until the kingdom's fall in 667.
Gongju was a capital of Baekje, and was a provincial city governing Chungcheong provinice. So it has lots of good places to visit. King Muryeong's tomb is the most famous site to visit and Gongsan Castle was the remained site of Baekje's palaces. Gongju National Museum displays the treasures found in King Muryeong's tomb.
